Monster Mondays
Welcome to Monster Mondays, the blog post where we look at a specific monster in detail (not necessarily on Monday). We will cover lore and mechanics so you can run monsters with slick verisimilitude!
Monster Mondays are usually about horrible creatures. But today we will be looking at a rather mundane humanoid species. One of my own design.
All too often we see magical creatures and places and things. But if there is magic there should also be anti-magic. So why not an entire antimagic species? Thus, Nilflox.
Nilflox Biology
Nilflox are born with inherent anti-magic. They have resistance to magic and can even create fields of anti-magic that weakens or in some cases completely removes magic. Some have suggested that there are no mundane spaces, only places infested with Nilflox.
Nilflox are medium sized humanoids with bifurcated ears. Their skin tone is generally pastel colors of pink to teal however some have brown and black tones. They tend to have long fingers and pointy teeth. They are omnivorous and generally civilized. Many take up jobs in large cities to stop rogue mages and wild magic.
Example Adventure: We Need A Nilflox
The town of Rushforth has seen a great deal of growth in the past few years. The town lies in a special area: a convalescence of leylines. Every kind of magic is amplified in the town. For this reason, many mages and wizards have immigrated to Rushforth to build towers and amplify their magics.
Here in lies the problem. With so many mages and wizards casting who knows what, the town is subject to outbursts of wild magic. Last week everyone was transmuted into a teapot. The week prior half the town was covered in a green slime that smelled of old socks. Thus far all of the crazy had been mostly an annoyance, but town officials worry that the magic could get out of hand in a dangerous way. They considered attempting to move they leylines, but that would require powerful magics in and of itself. Besides, the only reason anyone has come to Rushforth is for the leylines. Moving them would devastate the economy. So they decided instead to find a Nilflox.
Town officials are offering a large some of golf to anyone who can find them a Nilflox willing to work as an anti-magic officer for Rushforth. The officer’s job would be to stop rogue mages and wild magic. They need the ability to dampen magic or preferably create antimagic fields. Town officials are desperate and will pay well.
From this point players will need to search the surrounding area for a Nilflox. Once found they must convince them to move to Rushforth and begin working as an anti-magic officer.
Wrapping It Up
Well, I hope you have learned a bit about Nilflox and add them to your game. They provide an important balancing force in a game full of magic. If you play Along the Leyline, you can even play as a Nilflox. You can find them in the Payers Expansion.
